Word identification and decoding can be taught through the use of: Every making words lesson has three parts. First students manipulate the letters to make words. This part of the lesson uses a spelling approach to help students learn letter sounds and how to segment words and blend letters. Word identification is the ability to recognize and analyze a printed word, make meaning of it, and understand its context in a sentence. This skill enables the reader to comprehend text, which is the ultimate goal of reading (National Reading Panel, 2000). Unfortunately, many learners who struggle to read lack word identification skills. Some instructional strategies are discipline specific, and others are generalizable across disciplines (Faggella-Luby & Deshler, 2008).
